Quality and the environment are of particular importance in the mission statement of Erich Keller AG. Accordingly, all our employees work with dedication and responsibility towards the goal of optimum quality combined with a high level of awareness of environmental responsibility. In 1997, Erich Keller AG already acquired the ISO 14001 certification in respect of its environmental management.

In 1999, the company was awarded the «Naturparks der Schweizer Wirtschaft» (Swiss Industry Nature Reserve) quality label  for its production facility, which is designed in harmony with nature. And our production facility is home to over 90 native plants.

Out of concern for the environment
Ecological responsibility is a natural part of the company philosophy of Erich Keller AG, which is reflected in our careful use of resources and sustainable production. Consider this: Our consumption of electricity is slightly less than in 1992. And yet, the turnover of Erich Keller AG is today approximately three times that of 1992, and we work twice as many man-hours, too!

Sustainability in the context of painting
Painting is more than just a choice of colours; it is also about protection and intrinsic value. Painting is a way of giving furnishings a durable layer of protection. It conserves resources and thus protects our environment. The diagram of the internal waste water treatment unit below shows how water and air emissions from the paint shop at Erich Keller AG are reduced to a minimum.

Clever heating with wood chips
Erich Keller AG uses neither oil nor electricity for heating. Instead, waste wood is hacked into chips and collected in the silo. As and when required, these chips are burned in the special furnace at temperatures of around 1000 °C, which heats the entire building. These high temperatures ensure that combustion is both complete and clean. A fine particulate air filter ensures that the exhaust air is dust-free. In addition, heat energy is used throughout the year in the paint shop to dry painted furnishings. We generally uses PEFC-certified wood «The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification» is an international sustainable forestry scheme. It is the largest independent world-wide organisation managing and promoting sustainable forestry, ensuring ecological, social and economic standards. An alternative to PEFC is the FSC, the Forest Stewardship Council. On request, Erich Keller AG can use FSC-certified wood.

Facts and figures for 2018
Today´s consumption of resources destroys the foundations of life and the economy and puts nature and the environment under great pressure. That´s why we take responsibility. Careful and targeted handling of resources benefits both us as a company and the environment. Here are some figures about our consumption in 2018.

Power consumption Adjusted for sales, we achieved a saving of 1.4 % and even slightly improved on our target. With a figure of 20.9 %, we have more than fulfilled the cantonal requirements to save at least 15 % electricity by 2018.

Waste quantity MWIP: We were able to clearly undercut the 5-year average and reached the target very well. The proportion of waste per million sales is at its lowest level since measurements began. In addition, transport of skips was reduced by around 7 % and this enabled fuel to be saved. In a 10-year comparison, the volume of waste from 2008 to 2018 fell by around 22 %, or sales-adjusted (volume of waste per million sales) by around 16 %.

Water consumption We were able to undercut the 5-year average water consumption per employee. This despite the hot summer of 2018 with above-average irrigation requirements for the plants.
Heating energy consumption The heating energy requirement (heating and process heat) was reduced by 14 % compared to the previous year. Due to the mild winter, the energy requirement was ”Heating degree day adjusted” 12 % lower than in the previous year. This results in an improvement of 2 %. In total energy consumption, process heat requirement lies between 30 % and 50 % and can vary greatly.
