school building jungholzstrasse – gentle building renovation and air conditioning

During the summer months, room temperatures in the Jungholzstrasse 43 school building sometimes rose to over 32°C, accompanied by excessive CO2 concentrations in the classrooms. Under these conditions, normal school operations were virtually impossible. A solution was therefore needed to provide efficient air conditioning and active ventilation for the classrooms and offices.
Initial situation and challenge
A comprehensive building renovation was not feasible due to the building being fully let and the school continuing to operate. The work therefore had to be carried out with minimal disruption to the classroom operation. The chosen strategy was to carry out a gentle renovation during the summer months, when school operations were reduced. The renovation was carried out room by room and was virtually dust-free: old radiators were dismantled and replaced with modern Rio-Therm peripheral units.
Technical implementation
To meet the heating and cooling requirements in the offices and classrooms, highly efficient, project-specific optimised Rio-Therm B air conditioning units were installed from the ground floor to the 6th floor. These soundproofed units ensure draught-free air conditioning in both summer and winter and meet the comfort requirements of SIA 382/1 and SIA 180 with regard to thermal and acoustic comfort.
Ventilation concept
The rooms are ventilated via a connector fan ventilation system that supplies air from the corridors. This eliminated the need for horizontal ventilation ducts, which significantly reduced the construction costs. A CO2-controlled connector fan ensures a demand-based supply of fresh air. The IQ-CO2 room controller continuously measures the CO2 content (in ppm) and continuously controls the air volume of the connector fan.
This control system enables energy-efficient operation and optimum air quality in every room. In addition, the IQ-CO2 can be used to activate a boost mode to ensure more intensive ventilation when there is a short-term increase in demand.
Summary
The gentle, step-by-step renovation of the Jungholzstrasse school building has resulted in a sustainable improvement in the indoor climate – without significantly disrupting school operations. The combination of efficient air conditioning, intelligent CO2 control and acoustically optimised units now ensures a comfortable and healthy learning and working environment all year round.
